💡 Before you start
Most X profile bugs are caused by browser cache, CDN propagation delays, or session conflicts. These fixes work 95% of the time without contacting support or waiting days.
Bug #1 — Most Common
Profile picture won't update / shows old photo
- Upload your new photo at x.com/settings/profile — do NOT use the in-feed profile click shortcut.
- After saving, immediately open a private/incognito window and visit your profile URL.
- If the new photo shows in incognito but not your main browser, clear cache: Chrome → Settings → Privacy → Clear browsing data → Cached images and files.
- Still not updated? Wait 15 minutes for CDN propagation, then hard-reload with Ctrl+Shift+R (Windows) or Cmd+Shift+R (Mac).
✓ Fix works in under 5 minutes for 90% of users
Bug #2
Header/banner image disappears after saving
- X requires banner images to be JPEG or PNG, under 5MB, and at least 1500×500px. Anything else silently fails.
- Resize your image to exactly 1500×500px using a free tool like Canva or Squoosh before uploading.
- Use Settings → Profile → Edit Profile (not the clickable header on your profile page — that version has a known bug).
- After saving, wait 30 seconds then refresh. If it disappears again, disable browser extensions (especially ad blockers) and retry.
✓ 99% caused by wrong image dimensions or ad blockers interfering
Bug #3
Bio or location won't save
- X has a character limit: bio = 160 chars, location = 30 chars, website = 100 chars. Count yours — even one over silently fails.
- Remove any special characters that might trigger a silent validation error: certain Unicode symbols, invisible characters, or emoji sequences can cause this.
- Try saving from mobile (X app) if desktop isn't working — different validation paths.
- If all else fails: log out completely, clear cookies, log back in, then save bio before doing anything else.
✓ Usually a hidden character or limit issue — not a real bug
Bug #4
Profile shows wrong follower count to others
- This is a display cache issue, not a real follower loss. Open your profile in a private window or a different browser to see the real count.
- If the count is wrong for others viewing you: ask someone else to check via their phone. Usually corrects within 1–4 hours on its own.
- Do NOT unfollow/refollow accounts trying to "fix" counts — this triggers rate limiting.
- If count has been wrong for 24+ hours: go to x.com/settings → Account → Deactivate account → Immediately reactivate (within 30 seconds). This forces a full profile sync.
✓ Self-corrects in most cases. The deactivate trick forces a sync instantly.
Bug #5
Profile URL / username change not propagating
- After changing your @handle, old links still work — X redirects them. You don't need to update old links.
- Your profile picture URL changes when you change username. Re-upload profile photo after a username change.
- Update your Linktree, bio link, and any external mentions manually — X does not auto-redirect those.
- Gumroad, newsletter platforms, and partner links need manual updates. Budget 1 hour to update all external references.
